Welcome on board HMS Pinafore, flagship of Her Majesty’s Royal Navy – the perfect place to mock such
stalwart institutions as Government, Patriotism and even the Great British Class system! No wonder Queen
Victoria made her most famous utterance about the original production in 1878: “We are NOT amused!”
Josephine, the captain’s daughter, is in love with Ralph, a common sailor. But her social-climbing father
insists that she is to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty – whose roving eye has already
noticed her. The young lovers are caught as they elope from the ship and Ralph is locked in the ship’s
dungeon. Can revelations made by Buttercup, the dockside vendor, enable everyone to marry their true
hearts’ loves? Full to the gunwales with sharp dialogue and catchy tunes, this timeless comic opera is
performed outdoors by a cast of six outstanding performers from the world of musical theatre, on a
spectacular nautical set and using Sir Arthur Sullivan’s full score.
Performed by award-winning Illyria in the great outdoors.

Bursting onto the scene in 1992, Illyria has produced high-quality outdoor theatre for over thirty years. During that time, they are proud to have continually introduced new genres which subsequently became much-loved staples of open-air theatre:
• In 1997, they were the first to offer children’s theatre. In 2000, we were the first to introduce classics other than Shakespeare
• In 2003, they were the first to offer a Jane Austen adaptation
• In 2010, they were the first to be given the professional rights to Roald Dahl scripts
• In 2011, they were the first to produce Gilbert and Sullivan
• In 2017, they were the first to tour with a full-size T-rex in a monster-movie homage
• In 2018, they were the first to perform a full-scale musical
• In 2019, they were the first to offer a rock opera.
With a history of “firsts” behind them, Illyria continues to create outstandingly enjoyable outdoor theatre and make it available for everyone. They have performed for more than a million people – and intend to entertain families across the country for many more seasons to come.
Most performances go ahead rain or shine! But please note the following:-
If it’s raining at the start time, we’ll forge ahead in the hope that the rain will clear up soon. It will have to be raining very hard indeed (with thunder!) for the start to be delayed.
If conditions become genuinely unsafe, for example if the performance space is flooded or there is a lightning storm, we will stop the show.
Light to heavy-ish rain won’t put us off, but if rain is torrential (and the audience can’t hear the performance) we will stop the show until the rain clears sufficiently for us to continue.
If we can’t go ahead due to the weather, we will transfer your tickets to another performance or refund your ticket money. If we get through most of the performance and then have to stop because of heavy rain, we’ll transfer your tickets to a different performance.
